  • Project Description:
  • Australian filmmakers Sue Thomson and Adam Farrington-Williams are developing an important and powerful 80-minute feature documentary that gives voice to the stories of older women who experience homelessness and meet people working on the front line, desperately trying to solve it. Undercover will spotlight the complexity of the global housing crisis, just how it affects our social fabric and the way our society views our most disadvantaged.
  • Alleviating suffering / disadvantage?:
  • By spotlighting how the issue of homelessness, particularly among older women, is directly linked to broader systemic gender inequality. The film will explore this systematic imbalance and how this contributes to the growing rates of women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and economic deprivation in later life.
  • Changing Policy, Practices & Systems?:
  • Through a strategic social impact campaign that targets legislative change via the solutions explored within the film, the project will assist in the call for governments to provide more low cost housing and increased social services, exploring educational, economic and practical solutions to provide a chance for disadvantaged Australians to get back on their feet.

    The film will also encourage the private sector to assist in shifting the burden on government to business, and how businesses can use their philanthropic work to change the face of the housing crisis.
  • Investing in or empowering women?:
  • This project will support and empower women both in front of and behind the camera. In addition to giving a voice to women experiencing homelessness and economic hardship, the project will also champion and provide up-skilling opportunities to emerging and early career female film practitioners.
  • Media / Promotion?:
  • The film will have a theatrical and ancillary release through Australian and New Zealand distributor, The Backlot Films. The project will also have international distribution (yet to be confirmed). In conjunction with the theatrical release, a strategic social impact strategy will be rolled out to maximise audience exposure. The producers are seeking strategic partnerships to further promote and garner support for the issues addressed in the film.
  • How is success evaluated / measured?:
  • The strategic social impact strategy will involve targeted outcomes which will assist in measuring the success of the project. These will be devised by the social impact producer with input from our various partners and supporters.
